Density functional theory study of benzene oxidation over Fe-ZSM-5

چکیده
In the presence of nitrous oxide, Fe-ZSM-5 is known to catalyze the partial oxidation of benzene to phenol with high selectivity. The active site for this reaction is thought to be a surface iron–oxo species generated upon dissociation of nitrous oxide and release of nitrogen. In this study, density functional theory calculations were used to explore possible pathways for benzene oxidation at an isolated Fe center in ZSM-5. Z−[FeO2]+ and Z−[FeO]+ were considered as candidate active centers. The most favorable pathway involves the direct oxidation of benzene via the reaction Z−[FeO2]+(C6H6) → Z−[FeO]+(C6H5OH). Consistent with experimental observations, we predict that the kinetic isotope effect for the oxidation of 1,3,5-d3-benzene is near unity at 298 K. An overall mechanism for N2O oxidation of benzene to phenol is proposed on the basis of an analysis of relative rates of N2O decomposition and benzene oxidation. In the case of the isolated active center Z−[FeO2]+, the system shows a clear preference for benzene oxidation, whereas nitrous oxide dissociation is favored over Z−[FeO]+. This mechanism is then used to derive an expression for the overall rate of benzene oxidation. The apparent activation energy deduced from this rate expression ranges from 37 to 27 kcal/mol over the temperature range 600 to 800 K. At 673 K, the predicted turnover frequency compares well with that measured experimentally. 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Stable Fe/ZSM-5 Nanosheet Zeolite Catalysts for the Oxidation of Benzene to Phenol
Fe/ZSM-5 nanosheet zeolites of varying thickness were synthesized with di- and tetraquaternary ammonium structure directing agents and extensively characterized for their textural, structural, and catalytic properties. Introduction of Fe3+ ions in the framework of nanosheet zeolites was slightly less effective than in bulk ZSM-5 zeolite. Steaming was necessary to activate all catalysts for N2O ...

The reaction of benzene with the active oxygen species was studied by UV-visible diffuse reflectance and Raman spectroscopies. For the first time, the intermediate Fe(III)-phenolate complex was evidenced by a UV-visible absorption band at 690 nm and the Raman bands at 643, 896, 990, 1149, 1228, 1475, 1580, and 1607 cm-1. The Raman bands of the Fe(III)-phenolate complex were also confirmed by de...

Benzene alkylation with ethene over zeolite H-ZSM-5 has been investigated using density functional theory. Three different reaction mechanismsstwo one-step schemes and one two-step schemeshave been studied on three cluster models of increasing size representing parts of the H-ZSM-5 framework. In the one-step schemes ethene protonation and C-C bond formation occur simultaneously. The two-step sc...

Phenol is an important industrial intermediate for the production of various chemicals such as bisphenol A, phenolic resins, caprolactam, alkylphenols and adipic acid. The cumene hydroperoxide process is the currently used industrial method to produce phenol. Its environmentally stressing aspects have spurred research to replace this process with more benign approaches such as the direct oxidat...

We report the one-step synthesis of a highly active hierarchical Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst with a strongly improved lifetime in the selective hydroxylation of benzene to phenol with nitrous oxide; compared to the best Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst, the turnover number after 24 h on stream is almost four times higher.
